Wondering wt to do with those undesirable exotic trees on the Back Forty? By teaming with certain fungi, you can turn that pesky plant problem into an edible solution. We'll explore basic fungal biology and how fungal mycelium colonizes different materials, particularly wooden logs, stumps, and wood chips. You’ll also discover the health benefits of different edible and medicinal fungi in Hawai‘i.

Concerned about your family’s well being in these “interesting times”? Join us in this three-part online virtual series utilizing the Zoom Video Conferencing platform as we delve into the practicalities of resilience, using time tested techniques from permaculture, Pacific Island wisdom, and sustainable agriculture. Whether you reside on a rural homestead or in an apartment complex, there is an array of options to increase self-reliance for yourself, your loved ones, and our larger community. Topics for “Part 1: FOOD RESILIENCE” will include: resilience self-assessment, FAST food production strategies, nutrient-dense fruits/vegetables, immune-supporting protocols, edible wild plants, and more! An information packet of handouts and resources, including the Zoom PowerPoint slides, will be emailed to all participants. The cost of this workshop is $35/$30 VAC Members. Those who register online through Volcano Art Center’s website will be sent an email with instructions on how to join the live stream workshop online via Zoom.

Secrets of the Soil: DIY Strategies for Soil Regeneration

Volcano Art Center is pleased to offer another live stream online workshop that is perfect to participate in from the comfort of your home. Zach Mermel of Ola Design Group will teach the second in a series of virtual workshops, Secrets of the Soil: DIY Strategies for Soil Regeneration on Saturday, June 13, 2020, from 9am – 12pm. How is soil formed? What organisms reside within it? What are the different soil types on Hawaii island? Ever wondered how to make compost that your plants will devour like dessert? Join us as we explore strategies for dramatically enhancing the life-giving properties of the soil. Topics covered will include: cover cropping in the tropics, rapid topsoil formation, the fundamentals of soil testing at the homestead and farm scale, as well as preparation of compost teas and biochar. An information packet of handouts and resources, including the Zoom PowerPoint slides, will be emailed to all participants. Edible Wild Plants: A Hands-On Foray for Foragers and Foodies

Hawai‘i’s year-round growing season offers a wide array of wild food options for intrepid localvores. From seeds to leaves, stems to fruits: you can learn what is edible and what is not in the Edible Wild Plants workshop. In this workshop, participants will interact first-hand with many of these underappreciated edibles. This is discovery only – no picking! In this popular workshop, learn about wild edibles like plantain/laukahi, sow thistle, cat’s ear, and dandelion, among many others. This is hands-on immersion for foragers & foodies!
