ka maha ʻulu o koholālele

An ʻāina regeneration plan and agroforestry design for an ambitious, multi-generational agricultural endeavor.

Agricultural Master Plan | Koholālele Ahupuaʻa, HI

Ka Maha ʻUlu o Koholālele is a community-led, catalytic project to transform approximately 80 acres of former sugar plantation and current eucalyptus plantation lands in Hāmākua into Hawaiʻi’s largest regenerative breadfruit agroforest. Integrating traditional ecological knowledge with modern regenerative agricultural practices, this agricultural master plan combined food and resource production and processing, endemic and indigenous habitat zones, kauhale, as well as educational and social gathering spaces. The design expressed the unique essence of the Kohohālele ahupua’a, which guides the site’s adaptations to a rapidly changing world.
